The School Run: A Guide for Wednesfield Parents

Why the school run is a timing problem, not a distance problem

Almost every school journey around Wednesfield is short. Two or three miles, sometimes less. Children travelling on their own

This is the question we get asked most, and it deserves a straight answer rather than a vague one. If you are thinking about your child travelling without an adult, ring the office and talk to us about it directly rather than booking it through the app and hoping. Arrangements for unaccompanied children need to be agreed properly, with the right driver and the right understanding on both sides about pickup points, who hands over and what happens if nobody is at the other end.

Practical things that make it work

• Agree the pickup point, not just the address. Outside the gate at chucking out time is often the worst spot. A quiet corner fifty metres back is faster for everyone.
• Book the night before for anything that cannot slip, and get the first week of term arranged before it starts.
• Tell us who is travelling. Let the office know if children are travelling and how many, so the right vehicle is sent.
• Wet days run late. Everyone drives when it rains. Build in an extra ten minutes rather than hoping.
• Let us know about term dates and inset days so a car is not sitting outside your house on a day nobody needed it.

Not just the school gate

September brings back everything else with it. Clubs, after school activities, swimming, football training and the sudden reappearance of a weekly schedule that has to work around two working parents. The same advice applies to all of it, and it is usually the after school runs rather than the morning that cause the real headaches, because they land right in the middle of the working afternoon.
